Stupid fucking Swedish televoters.
Shirley should have been ‘direkt till final”
Well last night I caught up with semifinal 1 of this year’s Melodifestivalen. It is a time of the year I look forward to – following the competition and enjoying the presentation, the guest appearances, the interval acts and the humour that “Mello” is famous for.
But not this time. Semifinal 1 of Melodifestivalen 2014 sucked. And sucked majorly.
SVT seemed to be bored with the whole thing and phoned it in. They couldn’t even be bothered to change the opening graphics. The opening montage from last year’s competition was a total Zzzzzz-fest. And then those hosts. Jesus H.Christ!!!
Who ARE these people? And why are they trying to impersonate TV show hosts? They are about as funny as bowel cancer and add absolutely nothing to the show. In fact, they are a major liability. Even with multiple cue cards they had no idea what was happening most of the time and their banter was absolutely inane. When compared to someone like Petra Mede who hosted Melodifestivalen 2009 and Eurovision 2013….well, it’s like comparing two corpses to a live human being.
No interval act. An excruciatingly boring ‘comedy sketch’ involving the two ‘hosts’ instead. It was embarrassing. Just embarrassing.
Semifinal 1 also seemed to be a celebration of technical glitches. It seemed like SVT’s crew might have had a few little drinkies before the telecast because they couldn’t get their act together either.
The whole presentation seemed amateur and tired. Just very tired.
And the songs – well most of them – deserved much better. There were a few really good songs in there. My two favourites – “Casanova” by Elisa Lindström and “Bedroom” by Alvaro Estrella came nowhere. They’re out of the competition already. And they deserved better. But at least I was able to buy them last night – songs that aren’t progressing further in the competition are made available on Swedish iTunes immediately. So I don’t have to wait to order the full Melodifestivalen 2014 CD – I can enjoy them right now.
The two songs that made it through ‘direkt til finalen’ didn’t do a lot for me. But, on the other hand, I don’t actually hate them either. That’s a good thing. Everyone seems to be raving about “Songbird” – maybe they were listening to a different song than me?
Anyway, there are 5 more weeks to go. Please god that SVT wake up and get their shit together and start putting some excitement into the telecasts.
And maybe, just maybe, the two hosts get beamed into outer space and are replaced by living, breathing, entertainers!
Here’s “Casanova” – a classic schlager….
And here’s “Bedroom”. This sounds like an international hit to me…
Loreen’s f*cking unbelievable version of “Euphoria”, with Swedish schoolchildren from Adolf Fredriks Musikklasser, has been officially released on iTunes (at least in Sweden) to purchase.
This is a 4 minute 11 second studio version of the song that was performed on the final of Melodifestivalen 2013.
EUPHORIA 2013 is magic. It is magnificent.
Do yourself a favour – if you can, BUY IT IMMEDIATELY!
A very special version of “Euphoria” from last night’s final of Melodifestivalen 2013. Incredibly moving with children from Manilla Skolan in Stockholm -a state school for deaf and hearing impaired children. The children’s voices come from Adolf Fredriks Musikklasser. This has had me in tears it is really so beautiful.
Terrific English language interview with the newly reformed-for-Melodifestivalen Army of Lovers!
Oh my god…I said love, I said pet, I said love….
ARMY OF LOVERS shook Melodifestivalen 2013 to its very core. Or perhaps they just woke up #melfest after a pretty dull year.
What a performance! What an act! What a song!
As others have been saying, this spectacle is what Melodifestivalen has been sorely lacking this year.
Soooo fabulous to have them back even for one night! (And possibly also with a new compilation CD including a couple of new songs!)
I remember back about a hundred years ago watching Video Hits one Saturday morning and there it was: “CRUCIFIED”. I sat there open mouthed in shock. And awe. I immediately got ready and went into HMV in town to look for the single. Luckily they had it!
So many crazy records and clips followed….ARMY OF LOVERS were true originals. And Saturday night’s performance showed that they still are originals. This one had everything AND the kitchen sink!
Well Melodifestivalen 2013 has been a bust, hasn’t it? You’d think SVT had deliberately engineered it this way to make sure Sweden doesn’t win again and have to pay all those costs to host Eurovision for another year!
Even the opening credit sequence for SemiFinal 1 – which usually gets me electrified – was very “same ole, same ole…but even less!”
David Lindgren is probably my favourite at the moment – not having seen the 4th semi final (will someone in Sweden please upload these faster!!!!)…but the standard of the songs overall has been pretty dull. And I hate to say it but Gina Dirawi has been rather dull as Melodifestivalen hostess. Danny started off badly but is getting better week by week. A couple of interesting half-time shows don’t make up for an overall “Zzzzzzz” Melodifestivalen 2013!
Well, until last night!
Alcazar were back together….with Danny Saucedo guesting on “Not A Sinner Nor A Saint”. Danny looked ecstatic to be part of Alcazar for the evening and it was truly wonderful to see. I was at Alcazar’s farewell performance at Stockholm Pride a couple of years ago so it was a bit of a shock to see them back together on stage. What gives??? Well, Army of Lovers are back this year so maybe you can raise the dead!
The performance of the four of them really put a smile on my dial this morning when I saw it on Youtube. And they all look fabulous…Tess in particular is just a stunning looking woman. And Danny Saucedo looked extra fab! I follow Danny on Twitter and Facebook and he puts up sooo many random selfies it gets tiresome at times. God love him! And a lot of them are a little bizarre to say the least…in this clip with Alcazar he just looks normal and terrific and happy. More of that please!
Alcazar – as a threesome – did some more on the Melodifestivalen stage last night…see the clip below. It was like old home week. Or should I say “old homo week” ;-p
