Stupid fucking Swedish televoters.
Shirley should have been ‘direkt till final”
Well last night I caught up with semifinal 1 of this year’s Melodifestivalen. It is a time of the year I look forward to – following the competition and enjoying the presentation, the guest appearances, the interval acts and the humour that “Mello” is famous for.
But not this time. Semifinal 1 of Melodifestivalen 2014 sucked. And sucked majorly.
SVT seemed to be bored with the whole thing and phoned it in. They couldn’t even be bothered to change the opening graphics. The opening montage from last year’s competition was a total Zzzzzz-fest. And then those hosts. Jesus H.Christ!!!
Who ARE these people? And why are they trying to impersonate TV show hosts? They are about as funny as bowel cancer and add absolutely nothing to the show. In fact, they are a major liability. Even with multiple cue cards they had no idea what was happening most of the time and their banter was absolutely inane. When compared to someone like Petra Mede who hosted Melodifestivalen 2009 and Eurovision 2013….well, it’s like comparing two corpses to a live human being.
No interval act. An excruciatingly boring ‘comedy sketch’ involving the two ‘hosts’ instead. It was embarrassing. Just embarrassing.
Semifinal 1 also seemed to be a celebration of technical glitches. It seemed like SVT’s crew might have had a few little drinkies before the telecast because they couldn’t get their act together either.
The whole presentation seemed amateur and tired. Just very tired.
And the songs – well most of them – deserved much better. There were a few really good songs in there. My two favourites – “Casanova” by Elisa Lindström and “Bedroom” by Alvaro Estrella came nowhere. They’re out of the competition already. And they deserved better. But at least I was able to buy them last night – songs that aren’t progressing further in the competition are made available on Swedish iTunes immediately. So I don’t have to wait to order the full Melodifestivalen 2014 CD – I can enjoy them right now.
The two songs that made it through ‘direkt til finalen’ didn’t do a lot for me. But, on the other hand, I don’t actually hate them either. That’s a good thing. Everyone seems to be raving about “Songbird” – maybe they were listening to a different song than me?
Anyway, there are 5 more weeks to go. Please god that SVT wake up and get their shit together and start putting some excitement into the telecasts.
And maybe, just maybe, the two hosts get beamed into outer space and are replaced by living, breathing, entertainers!
Here’s “Casanova” – a classic schlager….
And here’s “Bedroom”. This sounds like an international hit to me…
Love this send up of “Grease Lightning” by Swedish Marines based in Afghanistan. They must have a lot of spare time on their hands or they’re just all frustrated musical stars!
Stockholm Pride was the usual disorganised shambles this year……Stockholm Gays couldn’t organise a root in a brothel. However, one very good thing did come out of it this year.
Each year a song is chosen as the “Official Pride Song”. Some are okay, others barely passable. But this year they’ve turned up an absolute gem!
Janet Leon’s “New Colours” is absolutely brilliant. A great lyric set to a thumpingly fabulous tune. And even a package of remixes to shake your groove thing to on the dance floor.
The 7th Heaven Remix is particularly delicious – as Scandipop notes here.
I saw Janet perform this at Pride a couple of weeks ago and she really sold it. I’ve just returned from overseas and had the chance to buy the track and all the remixes and well…just WOW!
Here is the lyric video for it….enjoy. (And buy it if you like it!)
Loreen’s f*cking unbelievable version of “Euphoria”, with Swedish schoolchildren from Adolf Fredriks Musikklasser, has been officially released on iTunes (at least in Sweden) to purchase.
This is a 4 minute 11 second studio version of the song that was performed on the final of Melodifestivalen 2013.
EUPHORIA 2013 is magic. It is magnificent.
Do yourself a favour – if you can, BUY IT IMMEDIATELY!
A very special version of “Euphoria” from last night’s final of Melodifestivalen 2013. Incredibly moving with children from Manilla Skolan in Stockholm -a state school for deaf and hearing impaired children. The children’s voices come from Adolf Fredriks Musikklasser. This has had me in tears it is really so beautiful.
Terrific English language interview with the newly reformed-for-Melodifestivalen Army of Lovers!
