He IS Popular: Eric Saade Wins Melodifestivalen!!!!

Eric Saade wins Melodifestivalen 2011

Sweden gets it right for once: Eric wins!

What a weird night. I went to bed with horrific images of the devastating earthquake and tsunami in Japan. The images and video from Japan’s own TV network and the BBC brought to Australia via ABC NEWS24 finally opened up the full scale of the horror to me. It was both mesmerising, surreal and just plain hard to take in.

I went to bed, got to sleep easily enough but had nightmares…not about Japan…but about Eric Saade and the final of Melodifestivalen 2011. In my nightmare Eric came second to some fictitious amalgam created in my imaginary dreamscape. I was angry, very angry. I sent twitters to the fictitious “winner” telling him I hoped his plane crashed on the way to the Eurovision final. I somehow drew obscene gestures and words on my watch and twittered them to him. I was furious. Obviously things don’t make sense or behave in a logical way in dreams.

And then it must have all been too much because I woke up with a start. I woke up with a headache, feeling like shit and remembered all of the dream. I hoped the contest was over and I could find out who the real winner was. But alas it was not even 7am and the final was still playing out in Stockholm. I got up, went to the toilet and then got even more tense…the suspense was killing me. The waiting, the waiting…I just wanted it to be over.

In the end, I took the coward’s way out – I took 1/2 a sleeping pill and went back to bed and got three hours sleep. When I finally woke up again, James O’Brien had already tweeted the winner. And it was Eric.

I dragged my arse out of bed and began to check Aftonbladet.se, Expressen.se and DN.se just to make sure it was really true. And it was. Finally the Swedes saw sense and chose the right winner. Finally, Sweden will have a chance at reaching a good position at Eurovision this year – after years in the wilderness caused by choosing the wrong songs to represent their country internationally.

Yoda is madly searching “those websites” so we can get the whole thing on a USB stick to watch on our TV. But no luck so far.

My gold Melodifestivalen CD/coffee table book box-set (which cost over $100) is on its way from Sweden but that’s unlikely to turn up for a while. Yoda has converted all his favourite Melodifestivalen entries to mp3s from the internet whilst waiting for his double-CD version of the contest to arrive.

For now, I’ll have to make do with snippets of the Melodifestivalen 2011 final performances uploaded by kind individuals on Youtube. And I’ll make do with the happy feeling that the Swedes have finally got their shit together and that maybe, just maybe, they’ve got a real chance at Eurovision in Dusseldorf, Germany this year.

Congratulations Eric – you ARE popular!

  1. How do you guys know so much about the swedish participant in Eurovision?? Or the swedish Melodifestival?? Just curious, nothing else. 🙂 I mean, I am from Sweden and I thought almost nobody except from us, knew about it…hehe xP

  2. I guess we’re going to have to start monitoring what you eat (or drink) right before bed. Too many weird dreams! ;-)) I watched the replay of the finals on the Melod. website & I thought there were several good songs. I actually thought Danny’s song “In The Club” was my fav. Next was the happy Sana…I liked that one too. I put Eric in 3rd. Standard ol’ boom boom boom. Guess that’s why they never ask me to be a judge! ;-)) Some quick thoughts. Swingfly…don’t ever use the words Rap & Music in the same sentence as far as I’m concerned. Nicke Borg…Bob Dylan with tattoos. Linds was very good…reminded me of a young Helen. The Playtones…very 30’s Xanadu-ish. Pernilla…a Cowboy song? Sheesh! Sara was too nervous…never had a chance. The Moniker…he looked like a yellow submarine & someone right at home on “The Jersey Shore!” Brolle…old show tune…funny hair. Fun show altogether…I wish the USA had more participation…but then it wouldn’t be called Eurovision would it! ;-)) Hugs you guys…Be Good!

    • Good to see you’re keeping up with Melodifestivalen, Fred. It seems The Moniker was a hot favourite but I have no idea why….as you say, it was a bit like a rehash of the Beatles…on drugs. But to me, it was Eric all the way. I reckon he’ll at least make Top 5 in Germany at Eurovision this year.
