They’re not the same song….are they?

The fabsational Maureen McGovern

Last night at the pub we were having a discussion about Maureen McGovern, the sensational singer of Poseidon Adventure and Towering Inferno fame.

James made a rather sarcastic comment that the themes from these two movies were the same song…The Morning After from Poseidon Adventure and We May Never Love Like This Again from Towering Inferno. I burst out laughing but John, a friend who is a Poseidon Adventure tragic was highly put out. He said they were not the same song and that We May Never Love Like This Again wasn’t half the song that The Morning After was.

Interestingly, they both had the same writers and producers, are both roughly the same length and have very similar structures. I did wonder, way back in 74 when Towering Inferno came out, why the songs were so similar. Of course I loved them both and bought them both on 7″ vinyl single. Back when they cost about $1.10 each!

I went to see The Towering Inferno at the Regent Cinema 1 in the city (Adelaide) when I was a kid. I think I might have wagged school that day. (It was a sports day so that was always a great excuse to wag school). The Towering Infernon was a movie that had an interval. Remember those? Instead of seeing some short boring featurette on ‘The Flowers of South Africa’ or something equally as dull, Towering Inferno had 2 parts. A shorter part at the beginning, then an interval and then you went back in for the rest of the movie. After getting an orange drink, a choc-top and a packet of minties (or jaffas) at the candy bar!

During the interval for Towering Infernon, I raced out of the theatre and across the arcade to ‘The Muses’ record shop and bought We May Never Love Like This Again…and then raced back and watched the rest of the movie. A classic song, a classic movie.

But is We May Never Love Like This Again just The Morning After in drag? You decide…

The Morning After

We May Never Love Like This Again

  1. I never thought of them being the same song before. Yes, they are very similar but definitely not the same. Trying singing the words of one to the music of the other and it all falls apart.

  2. OMG I had both of those singles too when I was a kid and I played them to death. I loved those songs…now listening again, I still do love them. Thanks for reminding me.
